Bangladesh added another medal to their campaign at the 6th Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh, as wushu athlete Shikha Khatun clinched a bronze in the women’s 56kg category. Despite losing her semifinal bout, Shikha secured the medal since wushu awards bronze to both defeated semifinalists when there are at least eight competitors in the category.

In one of the day’s other events, Bangladesh’s Saki Akter narrowly missed out on a bronze in the women’s 60kg class. With only six competitors in that division, the rules required a separate bronze-medal playoff instead of automatic awards to semifinal losers. Saki faced a Tunisian opponent in the decisive bout but fell short, denying Bangladesh an additional podium finish.

With Shikha’s success, Bangladesh’s overall medal count at the Riyadh Games has risen to five. Earlier, the country celebrated a historic silver in table tennis, won by the mixed doubles pair of Javed Ahmed and Khoy Khoy Sai Marma, marking Bangladesh’s first-ever medal in the sport at the Islamic Solidarity Games. Weightlifter Marjia Akter Ekra contributed three bronzes in the women’s 53kg category.
