The shackles are off, the transfer purse is open, and Bashundhara Kings are bagging players as champions should.

Just hours after clearing the final hurdle of their FIFA registration nightmare, the reigning Bangladesh Football League (BFL) champions wasted no time making a statement, landing Bhutanese star forward Chencho Gyeltshen on Saturday, the man they call 'Bhutan's Ronaldo'.

But Bhutanese 'Ronaldo' is just the headline act in a remarkable recruitment drive.

Following the ban clearance, the six-time league BFL champions moved swiftly to assemble a squad dripping with SAFF region talent.

Nepal national team veteran defensive midfielder Rohit Chand was the first through the door, followed on the same day by Nepali wingers Manish Dangi and Anjan Bista.

All four SAFF-region footballers will play under the 'Desi' quota as per existing rules, a shrewd move that maximises squad depth without consuming foreign player slots.

These are a kind of signings that makes rival managers bite their nails.

For weeks, the five-time Federation Cup winner sat handcuffed, watching rivals strengthen whilst 14 FIFA-imposed bans over outstanding payments to former players and coaches kept them locked out of the transfer market.

Eleven cases had already been settled.

On Friday night, the final three were lifted simultaneously, and Bashundhara pounced like an eagle.

With the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) extending the club licensing deadline to 1 September and the domestic transfer window slamming shut on 3 September, every hour mattered for the 31-game unbeaten home runner.

Chencho, who also wears the iconic number 7 jersey, has agreed terms to join the Kings ahead of the 2026-27 season, media reports confirmed.

This isn't Chencho's first dance in Bangladesh. The forward turned out for Chattogram Abahani in 2016, scoring five goals in seven matches.

The all-time leading scorer for the Bhutan national team, Chencho made his international debut in 2011 and has since netted 15 goals in 49 appearances. He has also plied his trade with several top Indian clubs.

On the domestic front, the Kings also secured national team footballer Quazem Shah, who arrives from Dhaka Abahani.

He joined the Sky-Blue Brigade in July 2025 but has scored only 2 goals in the 2025/2026 BFL season.

Anyway, since the Kings have regularly represented Bangladesh on the continental stage, appearing in the group stages of both the AFC Cup and the newly structured AFC Challenge League, this squad upgrade will strengthen the Bangladesh Giants outside Bangladesh as well, as the memorable win against Syria's Al-Karamah.

For the red-and-white camp, the message is clear: the bans are a thing of the past. This season is not merely about defending their crown; it is about reminding the domestic football circuit that the champions are back, hungrier than ever.
