Bashundhara Sports City is expanding rapidly and is expected to take full shape by the end of this year, according to Imrul Hasan, president of Bashundhara Kings and chairman of the Bangladesh Football Federation’s (BFF) Professional League Committee.

Hasan, who is also a senior vice-president of the BFF, said the sports complex had expanded significantly from its initial facilities.

“We previously had two football grounds at Bashundhara Sports City; now there are four. Similarly, two cricket grounds have been added, along with hockey and padel tennis. Squash is also coming,” he said.

He said work on the complex was progressing at pace and expressed hope that it would become fully operational within the year.

Bashundhara Group has already established a strong presence in Bangladesh’s sporting landscape, with Bashundhara Kings in football and Rangpur Riders in the Bangladesh Premier League and Bashundhara Strikers in the Dhaka Premier League in cricket.

Hasan said the group was keen to expand into other sports.

“We hope to get involved in badminton, chess, table tennis and volleyball. Hockey is also a major sport. So, it would not be surprising to see a Bashundhara Group team in hockey as well,” he said.

Hasan also said a group supporting a billionaire candidate seeking the presidency of the world chess governing body, FIDE, had expressed interest in working with Bangladeshi sports and Bashundhara Sports City.

Meanwhile, with the domestic football season approaching, Hasan is working to complete the remaining construction work at Bashundhara Kings Arena as quickly as possible.

The expansion is expected to strengthen Bashundhara Sports City’s role as a major multi-sport facility in Bangladesh.
