He was appointed to the post on Monday (March 16) under Article 11(2) of the Dhaka University Order, 1973, with the approval of the President, who also serves as the chancellor of the university.

Outgoing vice-chancellor Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan officially handed over the responsibility to him at the ceremony. Among those present were Treasurer Prof M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, newly appointed vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Open University Prof Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the National University Prof Md Lutfar Rahman, and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University Prof Dil Rawshan Jinnat Ara Nazneen, alongside teachers and administrators from various universities.

Deans of different faculties, provosts of residential halls, department chairs, institute directors, and a large number of teachers and officials of Dhaka University also attended the programme.

After taking office, Dr Obaidul Islam addressed a brief programme held at the virtual classroom of Professor Abdul Matin Chowdhury.

In his speech, he said his primary goal is to enhance Dhaka University’s position in international rankings and strengthen its global recognition.

“If everyone works together, the desired goal can be achieved,” he said, emphasising the need for collective efforts to ensure a fair academic and research environment and a student-friendly campus.

He added that the university would move forward through proper planning and implementation, urging all concerned to play responsible roles from their respective positions.

Expressing gratitude to his predecessor, Dr Obaidul Islam said he would continue the ongoing work in education, research and infrastructural development initiated during Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan’s tenure.
