Jagannath University (JnU) authorities have banned all meetings, rallies and processions on campus until further notice, citing concerns over the recent law and order situation.

The decision was announced in a notice signed by University Proctor Professor Dr Mohammad Nasir Uddin on Thursday night.

According to the notice, the restriction was imposed after three separate organisations announced programmes at the same venue and time on Thursday, raising concerns over campus security and public order.

"In view of the prevailing law and order situation, all kinds of meetings, assemblies and processions within the university premises are prohibited until further notice," the notice said.

The university administration added that all active student organisations have been informed of the decision.

According to university sources, leaders of the Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU) had announced a programme at the Shaheed Minar premises on Thursday to donate an ambulance for students.

Later, the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) announced a human chain and protest procession at the same venue at 12:30pm, alleging terrorist activities by Islami Chhatra Shibir, attacks on JCD activists and the promotion of mob violence.

The move follows clashes on Tuesday involving activists of JCD, Chhatra Shibir, Chhatra Shakti and Chhatra Front over a placard exhibition organised by the Inqilab Mancha to press various demands. At least 70 people were reportedly injured in the violence.

Activists of Chhatra Shibir, Chhatra Shakti and Chhatra Front alleged that JCD members attacked them and even assaulted injured activists receiving treatment in hospital.

JCD, however, claimed that Chhatra Shibir had attempted to incite mob violence against students’ legitimate demands. The organisation also alleged that students, frustrated by poor living conditions in university hostels and dissatisfied with a section of the JnUCSU leadership, resisted the alleged attempt by Shibir on their own.
