Two students of Dhaka University (DU) have been permanently expelled from Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall following allegations of homosexuality, according to hall authorities.
The expelled students have been identified as Afif Hasan Nirob, a student of the Department of Islamic History and Culture, and Ariful Haque Shuvo, a student of the Department of Marketing. Both were from the 2025–26 academic session. Afif is from Gopalganj, while Shuvo is from Netrakona.
Ahmed Al Sabah, general secretary of the Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall Students’ Union, confirmed the matter in a statement.
He said the hall authorities had taken the strictest administrative action against the two residential students after an allegation of serious social disciplinary misconduct (homosexuality) was investigated and found to be substantiated.
Considering the seriousness of the offence, they were permanently expelled from the hall and immediately removed from the premises in the presence of their local guardians, he said.
Sabah added that further disciplinary action was being pursued through the university administration. The process of referring the matter to the appropriate authorities for cancellation of their university studentship was also underway, he said.
According to sources, after the initial complaint was lodged, Sabah, on behalf of the complainant, submitted an application to the university administration seeking disciplinary action. An investigation committee was subsequently formed, and the students were subjected to the maximum punishment after what the authorities described as conclusive evidence was found.
Earlier, on 30 July, a student of Dhaka University’s Masterda Surya Sen Hall was permanently expelled from the hall following allegations of involvement in a same-sex relationship. He was handed over to the custody of his departmental student adviser in the presence of university authorities, Assistant Proctor Muhammad Rafiqul Islam had confirmed.
