A fresh clash erupted on Sunday between two factions of the Jagannath University (JnU) unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), leaving at least four students injured.
The clash reportedly stemmed from a Facebook post by JnU
unit Joint Convener Nahian Bin Haque Anik targeting JnU JCD Member Secretary
Shamsul Arefin.
According to eyewitnesses, the clash began at around 1:30pm
in the Victoria Park area adjacent to the campus and later escalated on the
campus. The injured were identified as Md Madud, Emon, Saif and Asif.
According to sources, JnU JCD unit Member Secretary Shamsul
Arefin organised a discussion session with students and JCD activists on the
third floor of the university’s Bhasha Shaheed Rafiq Bhaban on 19 September.
Following the event, Nahian Bin Haque Anik made a Facebook
post criticising the discussion session as well as Shamsul Arefin’s political
activities. However, Nahian Bin Haque Anik deleted the post shortly after
publishing it.
Following this, tensions escalated between the leaders and activists of the two groups, with several confrontations reported on the campus.
Regarding this, University Proctor Prof Azam Khan said, “We
called the police, and the situation has now largely calmed down. No one was
seriously injured. There may have been some minor injuries.”
He said measures would be taken to prevent such incidents
from happening again.
Earlier, a clash broke out between the followers of the JnU
unit’s two Joint Conveners, Mostafizur Rahman Rumi and Suman Sardar, around
midnight last Wednesday during a fresher reception and concert organised by the
JnU unit of JCD.
The following day, the central JCD directed the two leaders
to show cause over the incident.
