The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has asked coastal residents to remain alert as a deep depression has formed over the Bay of Bengal, bringing the likelihood of squally weather over the country's maritime areas.

In a special weather bulletin issued at 10:30am on Wednesday, meteorologist Dr Md Omar Faruk said the deep depression has developed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and the adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coast.

The Met Office said the system is likely to generate squally winds over the seaports, the northern Bay of Bengal and adjacent coastal areas of Bangladesh.

In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the BMD has instructed the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra to hoist Local Warning Signal No. 3.

The department also advised fishing boats and trawlers operating in the northern Bay of Bengal to remain close to the coast and navigate with caution until further notice.

Authorities have urged people in coastal areas, particularly those engaged in maritime activities, to closely follow subsequent weather bulletins and official advisories as the system evolves.
