Persistent rain in Nagoya has disrupted Bangladesh’s preparations for the Asian Games, forcing the cancellation of their scheduled practice session on Sunday morning.
The weather in the Japanese city changed sharply after a sunny Friday, with rain continuing throughout Saturday. The downpour had also disrupted the Bangladesh women’s team’s preparations during the early days of their stay. Bangladesh men’s team manager Nafees Iqbal confirmed that the practice session was called off after the Games authorities informed them that the ground would not be available. “There was a practice schedule for tomorrow morning. But the Games authorities said that practice cannot be held on the field tomorrow morning due to rain. They will announce tonight what time of day it can be held,” Nafees said.
The Bangladesh cricketers arrived in Nagoya on Friday night and spent Saturday resting at their hotel.
Eight squad members travelled from Dubai to Osaka after featuring in Bangladesh’s ongoing series against Afghanistan before taking a bus to Nagoya. The rest of the squad travelled directly to Japan.
Bangladesh will face Malaysia in the men’s cricket quarter-finals after Malaysia topped Group B when their final group match against Oman was washed out.
Persistent rain at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on Saturday prevented the match from starting, with even the toss unable to take place. Both teams received one point, leaving Malaysia top of the group with three points.
Malaysia had opened their campaign with a win over Hong Kong, China.
Bangladesh will meet Malaysia on 29 September at 11:00am Bangladesh time, with a semi-final place at stake. The two sides have met only once in international cricket, with Bangladesh winning their 2023 Asian Games clash to reach the semi-finals.
Malaysia recently toured Bangladesh, losing two T20s against the Bangladesh High Performance unit and three ODIs against Bangladesh Under-23.
Victory would send Bangladesh into the semi-finals on 1 October, where they could face Sri Lanka or the winner of Group A. The gold-medal match and bronze-medal play-off are scheduled for 3 October.
In the other quarter-finals, Hong Kong, China will face Pakistan on 28 September, while India will take on Afghanistan later the same day.
