The Myanmar military’s Deputy Commander‑in‑Chief Kyaw Swar Lin has urged officers to stay away from online scams, gambling and narcotics, saying such activities damage the army’s honour and image.
He made the remarks in a meeting with officers at
Army headquarters on Friday amid widespread allegations that the ruling
military remains deeply complicit in the online scam industry, The Irrawaddy
reports.
Kyaw Swar Lin claimed those involved in security
breaches had already faced harsh punitive action but provided no further
details.
Last December, then-junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun made
the same claim, in what amounted to the first public admission that the
military has been involved.
But despite official denials, scam operations remain
entrenched in areas controlled by regime-aligned militias and have have been
also reported in major cities like Yangon and Mandalay.
