The BBC is set to cut 41 positions within its sports department as part of extensive cost-cutting measures across the corporation.
With five new posts being introduced, the
restructuring will result in a net loss of 36 jobs.
To manage the reductions, the organisation has
opened a voluntary redundancy process, seeking to achieve as many departures as
possible through this route. Reports indicate these job losses will save around
£2.6 million.
The developments follow revelations that the BBC is
contending with "significant financial pressures", leading to
decisions to pull television shows and restrict development spending. An
internal memo sent to staff and viewed by the Press Association showed chief
content officer Kate Phillips setting out proposals to trim £80 million from
commissioning budgets by the 2027 to 2028 financial year.
Ms Phillips advised employees that the content
division alone is projected to shed about 100 roles by the end of this
financial year. The cuts fall under a wider plan to cut up to 2,000 positions
across the broadcaster, targeting £500 million in efficiency savings over two
years.
This marks the corporation's largest downsizing
effort in almost 15 years. Out of these overall cuts, 550 will affect BBC News
as well as television and radio operations, which director-general Matt Brittin
expects to yield £160 million in savings.
Back in June, Brittin told staff in an email: “The
scale of savings requires tough choices, careful work and won’t all be ready at
once. We are committed to letting you know as soon as we have plans in your
area. All divisions will be making significant savings…
“We live in very uncertain times. Our audiences rely
on us every day to keep them informed, entertained and equipped to make sense
of the world.
“Making savings while fulfilling our mission means a
doubly difficult time for everyone. Do speak to your leaders and use the
support that’s available. In the meantime, thank-you for all you are doing.”
The former Google executive added that senior
leadership positions would be reduced by "at least" 10% to make the
BBC "simpler and faster", adding that more details will follow
"in the months ahead".
