EC Talks: AL to propose search committee for EC formation

The ruling Awami League is likely to place a proposal before President Mohammad Abdul Hamid to form a search committee for reconstituting the Election Commission, insiders said.

The AL is scheduled to hold talks with the President on January 11.

The President has initiated the move to hold talks with the political parties to have their opinions on reconstitution of the EC as the tenure of the incumbent body will end in February.

Most of the political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), proposed that the President should enact a law for constituting the EC, which will oversee the next parliamentary polls slated for 2019.

AL insiders said during talks with President, they will propose enacting the law for the constitution of the EC in future.

“It will take some time for enacting a law. That's why we will propose forming the search committee for constituting the Election Commission,” AL presidium member Abdur Razzaque said.

He said the party would request the President to enact a law in future. “So, we shall support the reconstitution of the EC by search committee, as it was formed in 2011 by then present Zillur Rahman,” he said.

The Awami League on January 4 at a central working committee meeting at Ganabhaban formed a 10-member committee, headed by HT Imam to formulate the proposals of the party.

The meeting also took a decision that a 10-member party delegation led by Sheikh Hasina will attend the dialogue with the President.

The HT Imam-led committee held a meeting on Friday at party president Sheikh Hasina's political office at Dhanmondi and discussed the issues of the proposals.

Article 118 of the constitution empowered the President to reconstitute the EC, appointing the chief Election Commissioner and the other commissioners.

“We will hand over all the responsibilities to the President and will agree with the decisions of the President,” Razzaque said.

Former law minister and law affair secretary of Awami League Abdul Matin Khashru said they might request President Abdul Hamid to take steps for enacting a law in the light of Article 118.

The proposal preparatory committee will finalise the proposals, which will be placed to party president Sheikh Hasina soon, the meeting sources said.
