BNP on Tuesday alleged that Prime Minister's Energy Affairs Adviser Dr Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury is spreading lies over Unesco’s stance on the much-talked-about Rampal power plant project near the Sundarbans.
“Unesco in its report said the power plant at Rampal can’t be constructed. Even after that, Awami League leaders, especially the energy adviser, are lying over the matter.I followed his yesterday’s (Monday’s) press conference. How does he lie? His true face should be exposed,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Speaking at a discussion programme, he further said, “The honourable adviser is my teacher. He was a brilliant student at Dhaka University as well as a talented bureaucrat. He is also undoubtedly a freedom fighter. But what has prompted you to engage in a move to destroy the country putting aside your conscience and integrity?”
Barkatullah Bulu Mukti Parishad arranged the programme at Shishu Kalyan Parishad auditorium at Topkhana demanding the release of BNP vice chairman Barkatullah Bulu.
Earlier on Monday, Tawfiq-e-Elahi said the government will continue the construction work on the Rampal power plant project in light with the Unesco’s latest report which said the construction work can go on.
Mentioning the Sundarbans as the safeguard of the nation, Fakhrul said there is no alternative to the Sundarbans to protect the country and its environment and biodiversity.
“What’s your main motive behind the construction of the coal-based power plant at Rampal? Whether are you making the power to serve people or to protect others’ interest?” he questioned the government.
The BNP leader said people will indentify them as their enemies those who are working against the country’s interest by setting up such a destructive power plant.
