Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) of Dhaka University (DU) unit drove away leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) from the university on Thursday, as they came to the campus to partake in an open discussion arranged by general students demanding Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) polls immediately.
Witnesses said when hundreds of JCD leaders and activists gathered in front of DUCSU building on the campus in order to participate in the discussion, a section of BCL leaders, including Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall unit President Zahirul Islam and General Secretary Mehdi Hasan Sani and SM Hall Chhatra unit President Tahsan Ahmed Russel, drove them off the campus.
President of DU unit BCL Abid Al Hasan claimed that JCD leaders came to the campus to create chaos, not to take part in the discussion.
On the other hand, Secretary of DU unit JCD Basar Siddique told daily sun that they intended to join the event to show solidarity with general students.
He claimed that JCD joint convener of Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall unit Omar Faruque Mamun and a leader of Jagannath Hall unit Jayonto were injured during the chase. On Thursday, general students organised the open discussion at Modhur Canteen. They invited DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique and associate bodies of different political parties to the meeting, but the DU VC and BCL were absent from it.
Some BCL Leaders said that they could not participate in the programme due to business, as it was a month of mourning while some others claimed that they did not receive any letter of invitation.
Talking to daily sun, Mahadi al Masud, convener of general students, said BCL did not participate in the meeting, as they do not approve of DUCSU polls.
DU VC Prof Arefin told daily sun that he could attend the event because of his tight schedule.
