An earthquake shook the capital and nearby areas at 9:28pm on Monday night.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) categorised the 4.0-magnitude tremor as “light.”

The epicenter was in Rupganj, Narayanganj, 16 kilometres away from the BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon, Dhaka, said Farzana Sultana, assistant meteorologist at BMD.

The tremor was the latest in a series of quakes since November last year that originated inside the country in a break from modern historical trends.

As such, Monday’s “light” tremor was felt stronger than most previous earthquakes with greater magnitudes, and foreign epicentres.

Although no casualties or major damage were reported immediately, many people became alarmed after feeling the tremors.

Residents of several high-rise buildings in the capital came out of their apartments and moved to open and safer areas following the quake.

On 21 November last year, a deadly earthquake erupted in Narsingdi, becoming potentially the first in recent history to originate inside the country. Since then, a number of aftershocks and quakes have erupted inside the country including the capital.
