What Is Islam's Warning About Earthquakes?
Allah says: When the earth is shaken with its final quake. (Surah Az-Zalzalah)
Warning about earthquakes and the responsibilities of human being are discussed in the holy Quran.
Human life on earth is shaped by both blessings and trials. The nature, by Almighty Allah's command, often inspires awe with its beauty and abundance, yet it can also reveal its immense power through devastating natural disasters. Among the many natural disasters, including floods, cyclones, storm surges, and wildfires, earthquakes stand out as one of the most devastating and destructive forces.
Striking without warning, they can bring towering structures to the ground within seconds, transform vibrant communities into scenes of devastation, and remind humanity of its fragility in the face of nature's overwhelming power.
Modern science explains earthquakes as the result of tectonic plate movements and pressure within the Earth's crust. However, from a believer's perspective, every event occurs according to the wisdom and will of Almighty Allah. According to the Islamic point of view, a number of warnings about earthquake can be found in the holy Quran.
The Quran and the Hadith teach that natural disasters serve as lessons, warnings, tests, and, at times, reminders of the consequences of disobedience. Therefore, earthquakes should not be viewed solely as geological phenomena but also as opportunities for self-reflection, repentance, and turning back to Allah.
Warning About Earthquakes In The Holy Quran
The Holy Quran mentions earthquakes in several places. Allah warns people against thoughtlessness, saying: "Did the people of the towns feel secure that Our punishment would not come upon them at night while they were asleep?" (Surah Al-Araf, 7:97)
Almighty Allah also says: "Whatever natural disaster befalls you is because of what your own hands have earned, though He pardons much." (Surah Ash-Shura, 42:30)
This verse reminds us that human sins and disobedience may sometimes be causes of divine displeasure. Yet Allah's mercy is vast, and He forgives countless offenses.
Earthquake Terminology In The Quran
The Quran uses various terms to describe earthquakes, including Zilzal and Dakkah.
Zilzal refers to intense shaking or repeated trembling. Allah says: "When the earth is shaken with its final quake." (Surah Az-Zalzalah, 99:1)
Dakkah refers to being crushed or shattered by a powerful blow. Allah says: "No! When the earth is crushed, pounded, and leveled." (Surah Al-Fajr, 89:21)
Earthquakes As Sign Of The Day Of Judgment
The Quran and the Hadith indicate that earthquakes will increase as the Day of Judgment approaches.
Allah says: "O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the earthquake of the Hour is a tremendous thing." (Surah Al-Hajj, 22:1)
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The Hour will not be established until earthquakes become frequent." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 1036)
This hadith suggests that an increase in earthquakes is among the signs of the approaching Day of Judgment.
Warning About Earthquake In The Hadith And Our Moral Corruption
The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned that when certain forms of moral corruption become widespread, divine punishments may follow. He said: "When singing girls, musical instruments, and intoxicants become prevalent among my nation, they will be afflicted with landslides, transformations, and showers of stones." (Jami' at-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2212)
Other narrations mention social evils such as betrayal of trust, unlawful acquisition of wealth, severing family ties, and the appointment of unqualified leaders. (Tirmidhi, Hadith 1447, paraphrased)
However, it is important to remember that no one can definitively claim that a specific earthquake occurred because of a particular sin. Only Allah possesses complete knowledge of such matters. Nevertheless, such events undoubtedly serve as warnings and opportunities for spiritual reform.
Nations Destroyed By Earthquakes In History
The Quran recounts how several disobedient nations faced divine punishment. Regarding the people of Thamud, Allah says: "Then the earthquake seized them, and they lay lifeless in their homes." (Surah Al-A'raf, 7:78)
What Should a Believer Do During an Earthquake?
When an earthquake or any other disaster occurs, a believer is encouraged to turn first to Allah with sincerity and faith. This includes seeking forgiveness through sincere repentance (Tawbah) and asking Allah for mercy and pardon (Istighfar). A believer should also engage in dua and remembrance of Allah, praying for safety, protection, and relief from hardship. Offering voluntary prayers is another way to seek Allah’s help during difficult times.
At the same time, one should reflect on their own actions, shortcomings, and responsibilities in order to improve themselves spiritually and morally. Additionally, Islam emphasizes the importance of helping those affected by disasters, as supporting and assisting others in times of crisis is considered a noble act of worship.
