Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman has said that since joining the United Nations, Bangladesh has embraced multilateralism as a cornerstone of its foreign policy.
He also reaffirmed the country's commitment to
global peace, security, and cooperation.
Khalilur made the remarks as the chief guest at a
reception marking Bangladesh’s 56th Independence and National Day, hosted by
the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York on Thursday,
according to a message.
Around 150 permanent representatives, senior UN
officials, and members of the diplomatic community attended the reception.
The foreign minister noted that since becoming a UN
member in 1974, Bangladesh has consistently contributed to UN peacekeeping
missions. He also highlighted the country’s continued humanitarian support for
the Rohingya people.
He further stated that despite various challenges,
Bangladesh has achieved significant socio-economic progress over the past five
decades through constructive engagement guided by the principles of the UN
Charter.
In his welcome remarks, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative
to the United Nations Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury said that 26 March
represents not only the birth of a nation but also the eternal triumph of the
people's will, dignity, and freedom.
Earlier, a discussion meeting was held at the
mission auditorium, where messages from national leaders were read out. A
special documentary highlighting the significance of Independence Day was also
screened during the programme.
