Popular lyricist, composer and music director Prince Mahmud has called for greater social awareness and open dialogue surrounding suicide prevention and mental health.

Talking to the Daily Sun on Thursday, Prince Mahmud said society needs to address the issue with greater sensitivity and empathy.

“There is a need to raise social awareness regarding suicidal tendencies. It is a deeply sensitive issue—one we often fail to even consider. Open dialogue about mental health is essential; there should be no room for political affiliations, ideologies, or personal differences here,” he said.

The noted artiste recently expressed concern over the condition of former Bangladesh Chhatra Union president Meghmallar Basu, who was reportedly placed on life support at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday after his condition deteriorated.

In a social media post, Prince Mahmud reflected on Basu’s reported struggles with mental health and urged people to respond with compassion rather than political considerations. He emphasised the importance of providing emotional support and professional counselling to people going through severe mental distress.

Prince Mahmud also stressed the need for a supportive environment where individuals can speak openly about their emotional struggles without fear of judgement.

Following the post, many people expressed their support for the artiste’s message in the comment section. His remarks have once again highlighted the importance of public awareness, empathy and professional support in addressing mental health concerns.
