CHITTAGONG: Two more bodies were recovered from Rangamati early Saturday, raising the death toll from Tuesday’s massive landsides in five hilly districts to 157.

Locals pulled out the bodies from remote Dumdumia union of Juraichhari upazila. The deceased were identified as Tiyong Chakma, 17, and Chigechotha Chakma, 17.

The district administration wrapped up the rescue operation in the landslide-ravaged areas on Friday afternoon.

Army troops, firefighters, policemen and several other organisations took part in the recovery work.

With recovery of the two bodies, the death figure in the Rangamati landslides jumped to 113.

Moreover, 35 people were killed in Chittagong, six in Bandarban, two in Cox’s Bazar and one in Khagrachhari.

On Tuesday midnight, torrential rains triggered a series of massive landslides in the hilly districts, burying many dwellings, when the dwellers were sleeping.

The disaster has left thousands of people homeless.

Some 2,100 people were staying at 15 shelter centres opened for the affected people on Saturday, said Executive Magistrate Ikhtiar Uddin Arafat at the control room in Rangamati.

The magistrate said steps were also taken for restoring supply of essential commodities and fuel oil to address sufferings of people of the district.
